As an orthopedic sports medicine surgeon, I have the privilege of caring for athletes across all ages and levels—from young athletes stepping onto a field for the first time to professionals competing at the highest level. One constant throughout my career is this: athletic trainers are indispensable to the health, safety, and success of athletes. They are not simply present on the sidelines; they are highly educated, licensed medical professionals who serve as the backbone of sports medicine care.

Athletic trainers are often the first healthcare providers to evaluate an injury in real time. They recognize subtle signs that others may miss, make critical decisions in high-pressure moments, and manage emergencies that can be life-altering or even life-saving. Their expertise in injury prevention, concussion management, heat illness, sudden cardiac events, and musculoskeletal care makes sports participation safer for athletes of all ages.

From a physician's perspective, collaboration with athletic trainers leads to better outcomes. They provide detailed injury histories, ensure continuity of care, and guide athletes through structured rehabilitation programs. When an athlete transitions from surgery or clinical treatment back to sport, the athletic trainer plays a critical role in monitoring progress, reinforcing proper movement patterns, and preventing re-injury. This team-based approach allows us to return athletes to activity safely while prioritizing long-term health over short-term gains.

Athletic trainers are also powerful advocates. They consistently place the athlete's well-being above outside pressures to return too soon—whether those pressures come from competition schedules, expectations, or emotions tied to the game. They educate athletes, parents, coaches, and administrators, helping entire communities understand that health and safety must always come first.

March is National Athletic Trainer Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the vital role these professionals play in healthcare and sports. To athletic trainers everywhere: thank you. Thank you for your tireless dedication, your clinical expertise, your calm leadership in emergencies, and your unwavering advocacy for patients and athletes. Your work saves injuries, careers, and lives. As physicians, we value you, respect you, and are grateful to work alongside you every day.
