Understanding the MACI Procedure

 

MACI is a two-stage process:​

 

1. Cell Harvesting:

 

A small sample of healthy cartilage is collected from a non-weight-bearing area of your knee during an arthroscopic procedure.​

This sample is sent to a specialized laboratory, where chondrocytes (cartilage-forming cells) are extracted and cultured to increase their number.​

 

2. Implantation:

 

Once sufficient cells are grown, they are seeded onto a resorbable collagen membrane.​

During a second procedure, the prepared implant is surgically placed into the damaged area of your knee, where it integrates with the existing tissue to restore cartilage.​
